Book Art – Saving the Pages

Some people are appalled when I tell them I create art from books. I would be too if I wasn’t sure that without this transformation they would have stayed in the garbage. The inside pages were marred with goo and water. The covers were for the most part faded and crumbling. So before you jump up and down and say but its a book, send me your address and I’ll send you the messed up ones I haven’t saved yet.
In the meantime here are a couple of works I’ve completed with the saved books. They are reasonably priced so feel free to let me know which one you want…or get all three!

Space vs Place, Mazziotti’s New Art

At first brush, no pun intended, the work of Bill Mazziotti plays with what most artists use as a simple way of ordering a surface, the grid. But the truth is he is examining a new artistic approach to the concerns of space versus place. The surface presents an almost creased like pattern of folded paper with each edge scrapped to the unpainted surface of the support. The paint at first flat, actually deepens as you start to see the multiple layers that make up the surface. He then reaches through the surface, scrapping it back showing us the structured drawn, penciled grid underneath. Then he populates it with dancing dots of color.

I have always wanted my blog to be a place where I could show my work and work that has inspired me and also work that I have just found wonderful. And not just master’s work, but the work of us, the everyday artists doing what we do because we love it and some times are frustrated by it. Artists that are doing things that confuse them or stay up all night doing something because they suddenly ‘get it’ and can’t stop. Or art that I find out about when I talk to other artists, work that I never knew existed. Links to things that spark those things in a artist mind that an artist really understands.
Anyway enough.

Something new for me…4 x 6 inch Mail Art.

Mail art is a worldwide cultural movement that began in the early 1960s and involves sending visual art (but also music, sound art, poetry) through the international postal system. It has been said that many artists felt the commercial system of galleries needed a shot in the arm due to what was perceived as corruption. And while this actually did little to influence the galleries of the time, it did provide for the development of an alternative culture that thrives today.

I have created these and I am sending them out. There is no obligation to do anything other than enjoy the piece. If you are an artist and want to send a piece back that would be great.
